Camino De Santiago: English Way(Ferrol - Santiago)

Map Camino Inglés: Ferrol - Santiago

Pilgrimage from Ferrol to Santiago: History and cultural heritage

The English Way, a renowned path of the Camino de Santiago, features two main routes: the Ferrol Route (112 km) and the A Coruña Route. Both start from different locations but converge in the historic city of Santiago de Compostela. At Spain is More, we focus on the Ferrol Route, as it uniquely qualifies pilgrims for the Compostela certificate upon reaching Santiago, unlike the A Coruña Route.

Your journey begins in the historic city of Ferrol, immersing pilgrims in its cobblestone alleys and medieval ambiance. From there, the trail winds through lush green landscapes, ancient forests, and charming villages, culminating in Santiago. This route offers pilgrims a profound connection with nature and the rich history of the Camino de Santiago

Ferrol - Santiago

Detailed itinerary (view all days )
Day 1.- Arrival to Ferrol

Ferrol is an important coastal city of Galicia, the reason is for its port. Its military location has become the city at the center of countless battles for centuries. Ferrol has a pleasant and lively city center with good restaurants and bars.

Day 2.- Ferrol - Pontedeume 29 Km

The English Way officially begins at the port of Ferrol, where pilgrims historically arrived by ship. From here, the route follows the beautiful bay out of the city before turning inland towards the San Martiño de Xubia monastery.

The stage is relatively long, but it can easily be shortened by about 10 km by crossing the bridge shortly after Ferrol – or it can be divided with an overnight stay along the way.

There are several options for refreshments along the route, and the stage ends in Pontedeume, a charming Galician town known for its long medieval bridge and authentic atmosphere.

Day 3.- Pontedeume - Betanzos 20 Km

The stage is short and pleasant without difficult passages – but still with some variation in the terrain. The total ascent is about 450 meters. The route takes you through rural surroundings with few towns along the way, thus limited options for refreshments.

The highlight of the day is Betanzos, one of the most interesting cities in Galicia, featuring an impressive medieval center. The city was once the capital of one of the seven provinces of the old Kingdom of Galicia, and here you will find a wealth of historical buildings and attractions.

The stage can be divided with an overnight stay approximately halfway if you prefer a shorter day.

Day 4.- Betanzos – Bruma 28 Km

This stage takes you away from the coast and into the serene, green hinterland, where the landscape transforms into open fields, forests, and quaint villages. Here, you'll find fewer towns and limited dining options, so it's a good idea to plan your day a bit in advance.

The terrain is varied with some longer ascents, but generally without technical difficulties. It's a longer stage that many consider one of the most authentic on the Camino Inglés – filled with tranquility, nature, and classic Galician rural life.

The stage can be split into two parts of approximately 10 and 19 km. If you choose this option, the overnight stay is about 3 km from the route, but transport to and from the **Camino** can be arranged.

Day 5.- Bruma - Sigüeiro 24 Km

The stage is relatively flat and easy to walk, with good paths and minor roads that allow for a steady pace. The route continues through small villages and rural surroundings, where facilities are limited.

After yesterday's more hilly terrain, this stage feels more straightforward and allows for quicker progress.

The stage can be split with an overnight stay approximately halfway.

Day 6.- Sigueiro – Santiago 16 Km

A short stage without major difficulties – a lovely conclusion where you quickly reach Santiago and can enjoy the beautiful city.

The first two-thirds of the stage pass through charming, rural, and wooded areas. The last part leads through an industrial and suburban area before you arrive in Santiago itself.

The day's natural highlight is the monumental city of Santiago de Compostela, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage list, with the iconic cathedral as the destination of the journey.

Day 7.- Santiago de Compostela and Finisterre

A true pilgrimage ends in Finisterre and we will take you there on a tour.

The coast of Galicia is spectacularly beautiful and in particular this part which is called "Costa de la Muerte" (the Coast of Death). The coast derived its name due to the multitude of historical and legendary wrecks that have occurred there. Finisterre, on the coast's westernmost point is called the "End of the World" because for the Romans it was literally the end of the known world. Hence, it's a symbolic place for many pilgrims to complete their pilgrimage.

You may want to go down the high cliffs and look for a shell on the beach that will serve as a perfect reminder of your pilgrimage.
