Pilgrims of León: Annemiek from the Netherlands

About the healing effects of the Camino

"I went through a very difficult period this spring, my relationship ended and I got fired. All this happened in a period of 2, 3 months and I felt like I had to leave and do something. Then I thought about the Camino, I decided to give it a chance. I started walking 10 weeks ago.

At one point I arrived in an empty hostel (I started walking in France where the Camino is a lot more deserted than in Spain) and I felt very lonely... Eventually a German pilgrim came in around 7pm and we started talking and we walked together for 3 weeks. It felt like it was predestined that she crossed my path.

In the first weeks I had a hard time. Other pilgrims that I met along the way stimulated and encouraged me, they said that walking the Camino was a very good way of therapy and that it would certainly help me to get through this difficult period. I only realized that after a few weeks. In the beginning, while walking in France, I was very busy with myself. Now that I am in Spain and meet so many pilgrims, I really enjoy being together. The Camino in Spain is something completely different, there is a special pilgrim community feeling here.

Getting to know people on the Camino is completely different than getting to know people elsewhere. The conversations are more meaningful. Your first question to someone is not 'What do you do in life?' A person's job is not the first thing you talk about. It is more about 'Why are you here?' And then you notice that everyone that walks the Camino has a good reason to do it and everyone has 'shit'. For example, I got to know a Brazilian pilgrim who is going through about the same situation as I am going through now. She lives at the other side of the world ... Absurd! We are all so very connected! "
