Bilbao has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once a gritty industrial hub, it's now one of Spain’s most exciting cultural cities. Here, modern architecture blends with Basque heritage, world-class gastronomy, and vibrant neighbourhoods.
Whether you’re planning a city break in Bilbao, including it in a Northern Spain road trip, or passing through on the Camino del Norte, this guide shares what not to miss.
At Spain is More, we've helped hundreds of travellers experience Bilbao in a personal and authentic way — and we’d love to help you do the same.
Absolutely. With just two nights in Bilbao, you can explore the city's top attractions and enjoy its energetic atmosphere. With more time, Bilbao is a perfect base for discovering the Basque Country — from scenic coastlines and green mountains to historic towns and wine regions. Within 45 minutes of the city, you’ll find plenty of exciting places to explore.
Population: approx. 345,000 in the city, over 1 million in the metro area
Province: Bizkaia (Vizcaya in Spanish)
Languages: Spanish and Basque (Euskera)
Climate: Mild, humid Atlantic climate with green landscapes and cooler summers
The Guggenheim Museum is Bilbao’s architectural icon — and with good reason. Designed by Frank Gehry, the building itself is a masterpiece. But don’t miss the riverside walk to La Salve Bridge or the nearby Museo de Bellas Artes, which offers an impressive collection of classic and modern works.
Spain is More can include museum tickets in your travel package and provides practical tips in your personal guide to make the most of your visit.
Bilbao is a dream for food lovers. Instead of tapas, locals enjoy pintxos — creative small dishes served on bread. Head to Plaza Nueva in the Old Town, where bar after bar offers everything from traditional tortilla to gourmet innovations.
Some pintxos bars are touristy, but we'll guide you to the real local favourites. Every Spain is More guest receives a personalised food guide with handpicked recommendations.
Bilbao’s reinvention is most visible along the Nervión River. A walk from the Guggenheim to the striking white Zubizuri Bridge is ideal in the evening.
Cross over to Azkuna Zentroa, a cultural centre redesigned by Philippe Starck. Its 43 uniquely styled columns, created by Italian set designer Lorenzo Baraldi, make the building a highlight in itself.
Bilbao’s Old Town, known as Casco Viejo, is the historic heart of the city. Also called Las Siete Calles (The Seven Streets), this area is full of narrow alleys, colourful facades, local shops and lively bars. It’s the perfect place to wander without a plan.
Here you’ll also find La Ribera Market. While the building is beautiful, we find the atmosphere touristy and not ideal for finding the city’s best pintxos — unlike the many local spots we’re happy to recommend.
We often book hotels here for guests who want to be in the middle of it all. However, for self-drive travellers, we usually recommend alternatives due to the area’s narrow streets and limited access.
From international brands along Gran Vía to unique shops in Casco Viejo and design stores near Azkuna Zentroa, Bilbao offers great shopping for every taste. Perfect for picking up something special to take home.
San Mamés Stadium is more than a football venue — it’s a cultural landmark. Watching Athletic Club Bilbao play is a powerful experience. If there’s no match during your visit, a guided stadium tour is a great alternative.
Take the Funicular de Artxanda up the hill just north of the centre and enjoy panoramic views of Bilbao, the river and the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, it’s a must — and a perfect spot for a coffee or picnic with a view.
Bilbao is a great destination from spring through early autumn. Spring and fall are usually mild and less crowded, ideal for sightseeing. Easter week is especially popular.
In August, the city hosts its biggest festival, Semana Grande, with music, fireworks and celebrations. Winter is cooler and wetter, but Bilbao remains full of energy and culture.

At Spain is More, we know Bilbao — and our guests spend hundreds of nights here each year. We create tailor-made trips that combine Bilbao with the highlights of Northern Spain: wine regions like Rioja, scenic drives, coastal villages and cultural gems.
You’ll receive personal advice, handpicked hotels and a custom travel guide filled with practical tips and local insight.
