Detailed itinerary
Detailed itinerary (view all days )
Day 1: Arrival to Bilbao

During the afternoon or the next morning (depending on your time of arrival), you will visit the Guggenheim Museum (entry included in the price) and you can visit the Old Town in Bilbao and enjoy its marvelous "pinchos," a small snack, typically eaten in bars, traditional in northern Spain and especially popular in the Basque country and Navarre.

Day 2: Bilbao

Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque Country. Compared to elegant San Sebastian, Bilbao had always been considered the ugly sister. Things changed, however, when American architect Frank Gehry chose Bilbao as the home of the Guggenheim Museum, which gives Bilbao a magnificent, modern and futuristic feel. Besides the museum, there is another unmistakable thing about Bilbao, its food. Basque cuisine is the culinary mecca of Spain, with the highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world.

Day 3: Bilbao-Espinosa de los Monteros

Baggage collection starts at 12:30 at the Concordi Station in Bilbao, a unique modernist building dating back to 1902 and one of the truest heritage sites of Bilbao from the Belle Epoque. There's free time for lunch until the reception on board the train, which takes place at 13:45.

Once you're comfortable onboard, The Robla Express will head to Balmaseda. In Enkarterri (Las Encartaciones, a comarca of the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country,) you will visit the Museum Boinas La Encartada, which will transport you back to the era of the Industrial Revolution and will guide you through the history of the Basque textile business. Finally, you will complete a tour of the villa.
Back on the train again, you will enter the region of Burgos enjoying the scenery of the lovely Mena Valley leading to Sotocueva. There your bus will deliver you to Espinosa de los Monteros, where you will dine and stay the night in Sotoscueva.

Day 4: Espinosa de los Monteros-Cistierna

After enjoying your first breakfast on board, you begin the day with a visit to the Ojo Guareña Complex, the largest cave karst formation on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the ten largest in the world, consisting of over 100 kilometers of galleries, and declared a Natural Monument.

Next, discover Espinosa de los Monteros, a beautiful villa of Las Merindades, Burgos, while also enjoying some free time and lunch. After eating, you will return to Sotoscueva, where The Robla Express will be waiting to take you comfortably on to Mataporquera.

Finally, your bus will carry you to Aguilar de Campo and the splendid scenery of the mountains of Palencia. Visit the town, enjoy your dinner and return to Mataporquera, where you will sleep.

Day 5: Cistierna – León

The Robla Express will roll onto Matallana. From here, by bus, you arrive to tour the Cave of Valporquero, famous for its stalactites, stalagmites, spread of whimsical shapes, and its impressive Great Rotunda of 100,000 m3 of underground hollow. Afterwards, you will return to train you to roll on to San Feliz. There will be a farewell to the crew and you'll transfer by bus to the center of León, where the journey ends at approximately 14:00.

Day 6: Return from León

After the breakfast you will return to Madrid by high-speed train. End of itinerary.

Please, let us know if you wish more nights in Madrid, León or elsewhere during your trip.
