Las Médulas and El Bierzo – a unique experience on the Camino and in Northern Spain

Discover Las Médulas: spectacular nature, Roman history, and hiking in El Bierzo

2022-07-07

Las Médulas and El Bierzo is one of the most impressive natural experiences in Northern Spain. This unique landscape, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, combines dramatic nature with a fascinating history from Roman times.

At Spain is More, we always recommend Las Médulas as an experience you shouldn't miss – whether you're walking or cycling the Camino to Santiago or on a self-drive holiday in Northern Spain.

Las Médulas – Roman gold mine and World Heritage site

Las Médulas was once the largest Roman gold mine in the entire empire. Using the advanced technique ruina montium, the Romans literally blasted the mountains from within by directing enormous amounts of water through them.

Today, the result remains as a completely unique landscape with red rock formations, green forests, and gentle hills. It is precisely this combination that makes Las Médulas something truly special among attractions in Northern Spain.

Hiking in Las Médulas – experience nature in El Bierzo

Las Médulas is perfect for hiking, and the area offers several marked routes of varying lengths. Here, you can experience the landscape up close, walk among the characteristic formations, and enjoy the tranquility of the chestnut forests.

One of the highlights is Mirador de Orellán, where you get the classic view of Las Médulas. It's a short but steep hike – and absolutely worth the effort.

Whichever route you choose, hiking in Las Médulas is an experience that stands out from the classic Camino.

Las Médulas on the Camino – how our guests do it

If you are walking the Camino between León and Santiago, Las Médulas is a great opportunity to add an extra experience to your journey.

Some guests choose to take an extra overnight stay in Molinaseca, which is about 15 km from Las Médulas. This allows time to explore the area at a leisurely pace. We transport you there - and a few hours later - back, as public transport to the site is nearly impossible.

Another option that does not require two overnight stays in Molinaseca is that we arrange transport to Las Médulas from Molinaseca in the morning. Here, you can hike in the area and later be picked up and driven to your hotel in Villafranca del Bierzo.

In this way, you skip the stage between Molinaseca and Villafranca – but it is also one of the stages we often recommend replacing with this experience. If you have luggage transport, it will be transported as usual to Villafranca del Bierzo, so you don’t have to worry about that.

If you are cycling and already know that you want to visit Las Médulas, we recommend a short Camino stage where you can possibly cycle to Las Médulas instead. Alternatively, two overnight stays in Molinaseca or Ponferrada, either with pickup as described above or your own bike ride there.

Las Médulas on a self-drive holiday in Northern Spain

If you are traveling on a self-drive holiday in Northern Spain, Las Médulas is a perfect stop in El Bierzo.

The area is close to Ponferrada and Villafranca del Bierzo and fits perfectly into a round trip in Northern Spain. It is a different and authentic experience that many of our guests highlight as one of the highlights of their trip.

Why you should experience Las Médulas

Las Médulas is much more than an attraction. It is a combination of nature, history, and hiking that provides a very special experience of El Bierzo and Northern Spain.
