Bagage transport on the Camino – how it works

One of the great advantages of a Camino trip with Spain is More is that you can choose baggage transport between your accommodations. This means you don’t have to carry all your luggage on your back, but can just take a small daypack with what you need for the day.
Baggage transport can be added to our hiking trips, and on our cycling trips, baggage transport is usually included from the start. The transport applies on the days when you walk or cycle from one accommodation to the next.
How does the baggage transport work?
It’s very simple:
You leave the baggage you have ordered transport for at the reception of your accommodation by 08:00 in the morning.
Then you walk or cycle the day's stage with a smaller daypack. Your baggage will be transported and is usually ready at your next accommodation when you arrive. In some cases, however, the baggage may arrive later in the afternoon.
What is the weight limit for baggage?
Each baggage item may weigh a maximum of 15 kg.
It is important to adhere to this limit. The drivers handle many suitcases and bags every day, and baggage over 15 kg may be rejected or require an additional baggage unit to be ordered.
The price is calculated per piece of baggage – not by weight. This means that a bag weighing 8 kg and a bag weighing 15 kg count as one baggage unit each. If you have more than 15 kg, the weight must be distributed over two pieces of baggage, and transport must be ordered for both.
Does the baggage need to be labeled?
Yes. Each bag or suitcase must be clearly labeled with the baggage tag you receive from Spain is More.
What should I bring in my daypack?
Even though your large baggage is being transported, you should always carry a small daypack. We recommend bringing:
- water
- snacks or lunch, especially on stages with few shopping options
- rain jacket or light extra clothing
- sunscreen, sunglasses, and possibly a hat/cap
- medication and personal necessities
- valuables, passport, money, and mobile phone
- any documents you may need during the day
You should never send your passport, money, credit cards, medication, electronics, or other important personal belongings with the baggage transport.
Is baggage transport included in the trip?
It depends on the specific trip and the offer you have received.
On hiking trips, baggage transport can be optional. If it is included in your offer, it will be stated under “other services” or a similar section in the travel proposal.
On cycling trips, baggage transport is usually included, as the stages are longer, and it is a natural part of the travel format.
If in doubt, please ask us before accepting the offer.
Does baggage transport apply every day?
Baggage transport applies on the days when you walk or cycle from one accommodation to the next.
If you have a rest day and stay two nights in the same place, the baggage will not be transported that day. If your trip includes transport by train, bus, taxi, or private transfer, the baggage transport does not automatically apply in the same way unless it is specifically stated in your travel program.
What happens if I forget to set out my baggage?
The baggage must be ready at the reception by 08:00. If it is not ready when the driver arrives, we cannot guarantee that it will be picked up later that day.
Therefore, it’s a good idea to pack the night before and set out your baggage well in advance in the morning. At some small accommodations, the reception may be more informal, but the host or hotel will usually explain where the baggage should be placed.
What if my accommodation doesn’t have a proper reception?
On the Camino, you often stay in smaller hotels, guesthouses, rural houses, or B&Bs. Some places do not have a large hotel reception like a classic city hotel.
This is quite normal on the Camino. The staff are used to baggage transport and will show you where the bag should be placed. If in doubt, ask upon arrival: “Where should I leave my luggage for transport tomorrow morning?”
When does the baggage arrive at the next hotel?
In most cases, the baggage will be ready when you arrive at the next accommodation.
However, it may happen that it arrives later in the afternoon. Therefore, we recommend that you carry the essentials in your daypack so that you are not dependent on accessing your large baggage immediately.
Can I send multiple bags?
Yes, but only if you have ordered transport for the correct number of baggage units.
For example, if you have ordered transport for one suitcase, you may only leave one suitcase. An extra backpack, sports bag, or bag counts as an additional baggage unit and must be ordered in advance.
It is important that you only leave the baggage that has been ordered for transport.
What is the cost of baggage transport?
The price depends on the Camino route, the number of stages, and the number of baggage units.
On cycling trips, the price is higher per stage, as the distances are longer, but baggage transport is usually already included in the trip.
Can I walk the Camino without baggage transport?
Yes, of course. Some pilgrims prefer to carry everything themselves, and that can also be part of the experience.
For most of our guests, however, baggage transport provides a more comfortable Camino. This is especially beneficial if you are walking several days in a row, if you are not used to hiking with a heavy backpack, or if you want more energy to enjoy the route, the landscape, and the towns along the way.
Is baggage transport the same as taxi or personal transport?
No. Baggage transport only means transporting your baggage from hotel to hotel.
If you wish to shorten a stage, skip part of the route, or take a taxi to the next town, that is something else. It can often be arranged locally, and hotels are usually accustomed to helping with taxi bookings. But it is not the same as baggage transport.
In short
Baggage transport makes the Camino easier, more comfortable, and more manageable. You get the freedom to walk with a small daypack while your large baggage is transported to the next accommodation.
The only things you need to remember are:
- set out your baggage by 08:00
- use the baggage tag you received from Spain is More
- max. 15 kg per baggage unit
- only send the baggage that has been ordered for transport
- always carry the essentials for the day in your own daypack
This way, you can focus on what matters most: enjoying the Camino.
