Pilgrims' Mass in Santiago de Compostela – important information for pilgrims
For many pilgrims, arriving in Santiago de Compostela is one of the highlights of the Camino. After days or weeks on the trails, standing before the impressive cathedral, where the tomb of the apostle James is located, is a special experience.
One of the traditions that many pilgrims wish to experience is the famous pilgrims' mass. However, as of October 16, 2026, there have been changes to the location of the masses.
Where and when are the pilgrims' masses held?
Four masses are held each day throughout the year, but due to restoration work on the main altar of the cathedral, three of the masses have been temporarily moved to the nearby Church of San Agustín.
The current mass schedule is as follows:
-
07:30: Cathedral of Santiago, in the Blessed Sacrament chapel.
-
09:30: Church of San Agustín.
-
12:00: Church of San Agustín.
-
19:30: Church of San Agustín.
The Church of San Agustín is just a five-minute walk from the cathedral, near the popular food market Mercado de Abastos.
The 12:00 mass is traditionally the most important pilgrims' mass and the one that most pilgrims choose to attend.
No date has yet been announced for the return of the masses to the main altar of the cathedral.
A special closure for the Camino
Whether participating for religious reasons or simply wishing to experience one of the strongest traditions of the Camino, the pilgrims' mass can be a beautiful and emotional conclusion to the walk.
The mass typically lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, and admission is free. No reservation is required, but we recommend arriving early, especially for the midday mass during peak season.
What about the famous Botafumeiro?
Many pilgrims dream of seeing the impressive Botafumeiro – the enormous censer that swings through the cathedral of Santiago.
However, the Botafumeiro is temporarily out of service due to restoration work, and no date has been communicated for its reactivation.
Even under normal conditions, the Botafumeiro is not part of every pilgrims' mass, so one should never count on seeing it at a regular mass.
Practical tips from Spain is More
Remember that large backpacks and luggage are not allowed in the cathedral. Therefore, we recommend leaving your luggage at the hotel before visiting the cathedral.
The cathedral remains open to visitors every day from 07:00 to 21:00, although several of the masses are temporarily held elsewhere.
At Spain is More, we always recommend allowing enough time for your stay in Santiago de Compostela. The city is much more than just the end of the Camino – it is an experience in itself, with beautiful historic streets, cozy cafés, and a very special pilgrimage atmosphere.
This information was updated in October 2026. Since the changes are temporary, we recommend checking the current mass schedules before your visit.
