Along the same tracks that the historic Robla Railway ran, carrying cars full of coal from the mines in León to Biscay, the Transcantabrian began its career in 1983. And, so one hundred years after the legendary Orient Express, the first Spanish tourist train was born.

The Classic Transcantabrian Train takes the traveler back to that golden age of great railway journeys while he or she is still able to enjoy all the comforts and modern conviences of the twenty-first century. Its rooms and suites, carefully remodeled and acclimated display its full majesty in rail travel.


The train suites are spacious with wood paneling. The floor plan includes a living room, bedroom and private bath, all decorated with exclusive detail. Its ample space allows for a comfortable double bed two meters long (or twin single beds.) On the train you can choose a double or individual suite, where you'll have the necessary intimacy you desire on any trip. In addition, your suite will include a wardrobe, trunk, desk, safe and minibar. Moreover, for maximum comfort there are also LED screens, synchonized music, adjustable air-conditioning , multimedia computer with free Internet access and an interior telephone.

In an evocative and pleasant atmosphere, a first-class crew will introduce you to the rich culture and cuisine of Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia and provide the foundation that makes every Classic Transcantabrian trip a genuine pleasure for all the senses.

On this trip you travel from León to Santiago de Compostela, a journey through Spanish history, from prehistoric times to the present. You personally get to know the Northern Coast of Spain, bordering the Cantabrian Sea. You experience Northern Spain's steep mountains cliffs and green meadows, beaches and joyfully discover the towns and villages along the way. Each place such as Santillana del Mar, Santander, Santiago de Compostela, the Costa Verde... is full of charm, vitality and history, all places that have been converted over the centuries into works of art.

This train itself is fully set up so that you can fully enjoy Spanish culture, art, landscape, cuisine, and of course, the thrill of luxury rail car travel.

This train goes for 8 days and 7 nights from León to Santiago or vice versa. We combine this train trip with 1 night in León and 1 night in Santiago.

On your own, you can admire León's magnificent Cathedral, the Parador of San Marcos, the Basilica of San Isidoro, Gaudí's House of Botines and enjoy the incredible atmosphere of the city and its tapas, small snacks/appetizers. In the same way, you have the possiblity of discovering the beautiful city of Santiago with its legendary Cathedral and wonderful atmosphere full of pilgrims that come to this city from all over the world.

Flight, transportation and two extra nights before and after the train journey are arranged accordingly.

Day 1: Arrival to León or Santiago

Arrive in either Santiago or Leon, depending on the direction of travel that you have chosen. Accommodations are in a 4-star hotel.

Here we describe the route from Leon to Santiago, or the reverse if you are traveling in the opposite direction.

Day 2: León-Cistierna

Meet in León at 12:00 at the Parador San Marcos. There's a Travelers' Reception and then a unforgettable visit of the historic center of León, home of some of the most valuable monuments in Spain: the Gothic Cathedral, the Romanesque frescoes of the Collegiate Church and Basilica of San Isidoro and the impressive Plateresque-style facade of the Parador of San Marcos. After lunch, a luxury bus will take you to San Feliz, where the Transcantabrian Train and crew await to welcome you with a drink as the train begins to move towards Cistierna, where you will dine and spend the night on board.

Day 3: Cistierna-Guardo-Villasana de Mena

Like every day, you begin your day with a delicious breakfast buffet and a la carte. You will travel on the Transcantabrian Luxury Train until you reach the station Guardo, from where, you will continue on to Roman Villa of La Olmeda, Saldana by bus and see its magnificent collection of mosaics. You also will visit one of the finest ensembles of Romanesque art in Europe, situated in the palentino villages Carrion de los Condes, Villalcázar of Sirga and Frómista. Back on the train, you will travel through the stunning scenery of Valle de Mena until Villasana, where you will have dinner and stay the night. 

Day 4: Villasana de Mena-Bilbao-Santander

Like every day, you begin your day with a delicious breakfast buffet and a la carte. Day 5: Santander-Cabezón de la Sal-Santillana del Mar-Arriondas

Traveling on the Transcantabrian Train, you will begin the day in Cabezón de la Sal, where your luxury bus will be waiting to transport you to Santillana del Mar, a medieval village with a well-preserved old town. Afterwards, you'll explore the Neocave of Altamira, museum and greatest true-to-life reproduction of Upper Paleolithic rock art. After lunch, you return to the train which will roll along, carrying you into Asturias, where you will stop for a visit in Ribadesella. Your first step in Asturias will be enjoying its pleasant seaside promenade. Dinner and night in Arriondas.

 

Dia 6: Arriondas-Oviedo-Candás

Today you will be taken to the heart of the Principado de Asturias.
You'll visit the magnificent National Park, Picos de Europa, going up to Lake Enol, and later and later to the sacred shrine of Covadonga, a place full of tradition and legends. You will later return to the train for lunch on board and travel to Oviedo, capital of the Principado de Asturias and best representation of preRomanesque Asturian gems like San Julián de los Prados. Plan on visiting the city and having some free time before continuing on with your journey and dining on board. Overnight in Candás.

Day 7: Candás-Avilés-Gijón-Luarca

The day starts by going to Avilés, an ancient town that has preserved its valuable historical district. Next, you roll towards Gijón, a place as open as the Cantabrian Sea, a charming city full of cultural events. You will return to the luxury Transcantabrian Train to tour the Asturian coast until you arrive to Luarca, the Villa Blanca of the Costa Verde. In Luarca you will enjoy a guided tour of this charming seaside town, have dinner and stay the night.

 

Day 8: Luarca-Ribadeo-Viveiro

Reaching Galicia, you will visit Ribadeo, the historic village bordering the Principado de Asturias. From there, you will travel by bus along the Lugo coast to the Beach of the Cathedrals, one of the most spectacular spots in the world. Following that, you will take a tour of Ribadeo and have a bit of leisure time. Finally, back on the train, you will arrive in Viveiro while having your lunch. There will be a guided tour of this beautiful town and some free time. Dinner and overnight in Viveiro.

Day 9: Viveiro-Santiago de Compostela

While you enjoy your last breakfast on board, you come to Ferrol, where the Transcantabrian Bus will be waiting for you.  It will comfortably carry you to Santiago de Compostela. Visit the historic center of this city, the destination of pilgrims for a thousand years, with its countless artistic jewels treasured through the ages. The train ride ends after this visit.


At the end of the tour you will spend the night at a nice hotel in Santiago’s amazing old town.

Day 10: Departure
