Sleep in a Parador during your camino

Fecha: 2019-05-29

A little extra luxury as a pilgrim. Is it allowed?

What do you think? Sleeping as a pilgrim in a Parador. Is that possible? We think so! A little extra luxury after a long day of walking or cycling can sometimes be wonderful. And if you walk from Porto to Santiago de Compostela (or from Tui to Compostela) you will sleep with Spain is More  twice in a Parador. In Tui and in Pontevedra.

More information about our camino from Porto to Santiago and Tui to Santiago can be found here.

Parador in Tui

This beautiful hotel is located in the historic Galician city of Tui, on the border with Portugal. It is set in a majestic old building in a quiet, green area. The Parador of Tui is located on the banks of the Miño River. From the hotel you can take beautiful walks through the mountainous landscape, or along the river bank. Click here for more information about this hotel.

Parador in Pontevedra

Set in the historic heart of Pontevedra, this impressive 16th-century manor house is classically furnished in true Parador style with an elegant restaurant serving delicious, regional cuisine.

The Parador of Pontevedra was once the residence of Count Maceda and has been beautifully renovated, retaining its former glory. The property is built with robust, local stone and is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and a large sun terrace. Take the carved stone stairs to the rooms with a noble ambience thanks to the antique decor and lush fabrics. Individual travelers in particular appreciate the location - they gave a score of 9.3 for a single stay. Curious about this Parador, click here.

If sleeping twice as luxurious is not enough for you, you can also choose to sleep in a Parador in Santiago. This Parador is located on the square in front of the cathedral, a unique place. Sleeping in this Parador is optional. Ask one of our employees for more information.

What is a Parador?

"Parador" is the name given to luxury hotels in Spain that are managed by a state-owned company and that are usually located in buildings of historical interest such as forts, monasteries and castles, but also new buildings in nature reserves and areas with extraordinary beauty. Paradores de Turismo de España, the public company that runs these luxury hotels, was founded by King Alfonso XIII to promote tourism in Spain. The first parador, Parador de Gredos in Ávila, was opened by the king in 1928. Today there are 94 paradores of 3 to 5 stars spread throughout Spain, many along the Camino de Santiago.

Stop or stay?

Parador comes from the Spanish 'parar' which means stop, stop or stay. The concept behind parador is to open exceptional historic buildings to the public and use the profits from hotels to preserve these beautiful buildings. Most of them also have excellent restaurants with a high standard of traditional cuisine and local and seasonal products. Regardless of the date or style of the Parador, they have all been refurbished to the highest standard and offer all modern conveniences, as long as they meet the protected building regulations and are therefore a real treat for the pilgrim!

(* overnight in the Parador of Tui and Pontevedra is of course based on availability).
